June 25, 2004 - 3:30 p.m.

I don't know if it's budget cuts or just me getting progressively more jaded and at the same time, out of it, but there just don't seem to be as many good free concerts this summer as last year. See also my movies page, which keeps getting updated. I am sorry the concerts and movies are not all in one convenient list.

June 30: Aimee Mann at 7 pm in Rockefeller Park (west end of Chambers St.) except if you go to that you'll miss Josh's SPELLING BEE event at 8 pm Freddy's Bar (Dean St and 6th Ave, in Prospect Heights)
07/08 Time: 7:00 PM Music at Castle Clinton: The Stills. This isn't the same as the Shins, is it? Somebody fill me in.
07/13 Fountains of Wayne 7:00 PM World Financial Center Plaza. Wendy would be mad if I failed to mention them. Now I have that damn "Stacy's Mom" song in my head.
07/14 Old 97's 7:00 PM in Rockefeller Park. They are favorites of both Don Wood and Janeane Garofalo. "Roots Rock"?
7/15: The Sugar Hill Gang 6:00 PM Location: South Street Seaport, Pier 17. I missed this aspect of the 80s or whenever this was, did they have a hit single or something?
7/17 Siren Fest at Coney Island: Death Cab For Cutie, Blonde Redhead, And You Will Know U s By The Trail Of Dead, Mission Of Burma, Har Mar Superstar, TV On The Radio, Electric Six, The Fiery Furnaces, The Fever, Constantines, Vue, The Thermals, The Ponys and Your Enemies Friends
Thursday, July 22 7:30pm PERE UBU CLEM SNIDE at the Pr ospect Park Bandshell. Pere Ubu is one of those so-called seminal bands. There will also be a movie, the man with the x-ray eyes I think.
Or, that same day at Castle Clinton: Mavis Staples Time: 7:00 PM Yeah, from the Staples Singers. Soul/gospel.
saturday, july 24 at East River Park Amphitheatr e 2-6 pm Ted Leo/Rx, The Natural History, Sea Ray, and Tigers and Monkeys. Ummm, I don't know what this is, it sounds familiar..
Saturday, July 24 7:30pm at Prospect Park Bandshell: JAY FARRAR (from Uncle Tupelo and Son Volt) and MARTHA WAINWRIG HT she is a good singer, from the Wainwright family of musical products
Thursday 07/27 Time: 1:00 PM Bobby Blue Bland at South Street Seaport, Pier 17. I don't know about you but I just love spry old guys, he puts on a good show from what I recall. Except note that you?d have to be unemployed or work right by there in order to go.
07/29/2004 Castle Clinton: Cecil Taylor Time: 7:00 PM When I was 18 my parents sent me to Oregon for a week to make sure I really wanted to go to that college. The re is not a lot to do in Portland as a tourist. I took myself to see Cecil Taylor. I think I was cooler then than I am now. It's experimental jazz type stuff on the piano.
08/05 Castle Clinton: Beulah Time: 7:00 PM. Is this like Sebadoh? God I'm ou t of it.
8/10 8pm Sonny Rollins outdoors at Lincoln Center. Jazz baby, jazz! Your standard non-wacky jazz.
Little Steven's International Underground Garage Festival, WHO: Iggy Pop & The Stooges, The Strokes, The New York Dolls, The Pretty Things, Bo Diddley, The Raveonettes, The Mooney Suzuki, The Romantics, The Chesterfield Kings, The Fuzztones, The Electric Prunes, and more to be announced. WHAT: Non-stop Garage Rock WHERE: Randall's Island, New York City WHEN: August 14, 2004, 10am-11pm This one is not free, it's $20 and the tickets go on sale today and will likely sell out, like, tomorrow! General Admission. My ticket already done been bought.
Nas at Central Park Summerstage Date & Time: 8/15/2004 3:00 PM "Suggested Donation" is $1 0. This is some kind of superfamous person.
August 18 8pm Chinese Opera at Lincoln Center outdoors. I figure this is my chance to see it in a smaller dose without that "Oh my God I'm trapped here for four hours" feeling.
August 19 Pier 54 (West end of 14th St) 7pm Guided by Voices. "That band from chicago or something who've been around forever and maybe drink too much."
and/or 6:30 in Lincoln Center the Krakatau Ensemble (Indonesian Rock) because, well, why not?

Venue Notes:
Castle Clinton: this is that round stone area in Battery Park where you get statue of liberty tickets. Last year I tried to go to Cat Power but was too late (5:45!) to get tickets so poor Kristy and I had to sit outside and stare wanly at the speakers and wonder what was happening on stage. It was a good broadcast though.
Prospect Park Amphitheatre: enter at 9th st and PPW. They prefer that you pay $3 for the free shows, you can do that, then you can call yourself a "patron of the arts." In the front you can s it on folding chairs and in the back sit on the grass. Long lines for beer and pizza and bathroom.
Rockefeller Park: This is at the west end of Chambers st on the Hudson. It might be my favorite of these venues. There a bunch of room and it's pretty and the only problem is the helicopter and ferry traffic noise.
South Street Seaport: This might be the most random venue because of all the random people that are already there. Namely middle american school groups and elderly chinese people. Festive! Beer on tap is for sale, no line.
WFC Plaza: This is just west of the Winter Garden. There's a penned-in seating area and then you can crowd in on the left side and watch from there, standing up. Get there early and bring a sunhat cuz it?s uninterrupted western afternoon sun. Other venues I don't have much to say about. Coney Island you already know about. y
