July 15, 2004 - 3:58 p.m. So, I was worried that I wouldn't be able to get in and hold three seats at the Old 97's show at Stuyvesant High School yesterday, but it worked out fine. They have a nice new high tech auditorium over there. As the band pointed out, it was kind of like being in a required assembly or detention, but the band rocked the house anyway. Finally at the end some people rushed the front and were dancing by the stage and up the aisles. But I couldn't shake the terror in my heart because the principal(?) had stood up before the show began and said that the front area should not be used as a "mosh pit" since it could only hold 1,000 pounds. As Jim pointed out, that's only about seven people, and there were at least 30 on there. Somehow disaster did not strike, however. That woulda sucked. I liked the Old 97's more than a lot of things, but not as much as others. Basically. There is a better review of the show here. Tonight I will be appearing at the exclusive screening of "Shrek" in dumbo. There will be a 10 month old baby on hand and though she is pre-verbal and will thus perhaps miss a few of the more rarefied philosophical themes of the film, she will provide an excellent alibi for the presence of the adults in her entourage. In other news, I cannot seem to rid myself of this pesky crush on Don Wood, but I think I'm ready to add in a crush on Gary Shteyngart. Any information leading to his capture will be well-rewarded.
