Oh yes oh yes oh yes! I (I mean "we") won at trivia last night! The team of Nils, Matt S., Carlyn's friend Mia's friend Adam, and myself each walked away with $39 of other people's money. "Ants Invasion" beat The Neuticles, Suspicious Package, and even our better half, Operation Infinite Wedgie. We were only 1.5 points ahead of the other teams, I guess after acing the visual round, which had bonus points in it. There were pictures of five dictators and you had to give their name and country. My teammates had it nailed! I went and got a club soda because I was helpless. I had just been remarking earlier in the evening on how I used to be extra sharp with names and faces, and then I started forgetting names, and now I don't even remember faces! I can only remember minutiae of conversations, generally not even the key points. Oh well. The bonus round was to "draw a picture of your favorite holiday," and pitchers of beer were given to the top four teams. We won that too, thanks to the mad skillz of the random friend of friend guy. I think he was also the only person in the bar to get the "Mordecai Richler character who says everything twice" question. (answer: Susie Numbnuts. ok no, that's what I would have put if he hadn't stepped in.) Matt knew Leonard Cohen's latest album title, Nils knew, I don't know, a lot, and I knew what the Moh's Scale measures (the hardness of gems).
A major flaw in the trivia setup, I feel, is that beer is awarded at the very end of the night, even though it is not linked to final point rankings. Since the evening always gets started late, has lengthy breaks, and just takes a longass time in general, the beer finally comes at 12:15AM, when many of us yuppies should already be in bed. We'd like to hang out longer, but we have to schlep home and get up early and achieve(!) the next day. Don't you agree that beer should be given out midway in the contest, when we need it the most?!? And/or it should start earlier? Dr. Fact?!?
At any rate, I just spoke with Nils and we are going to try to take the (p)ants invasion (and our $39) to Pete's Candy Store on Wednesday. All are welcome to join our team and ride the wave.
